Buying Celtic Wedding Bands: Choosing Ring Material

By Liam Grant

So you've decided on Celtic wedding bands, there are still some decisions to make. Choosing between rings, the main choice is the material of the ring itself. Since there are many alloys on the market for rings, we will look at four popular choices for rings right now. First we will review yellow gold. Then we will move on to white gold. After that, we will learn about titanium. Finally, we will discover tungsten carbide. While there may not be one correct answer, couples will find some alloys are better for their desires.

Traditional yellow gold is probably the most popular choice for wedding rings historically. Its intrinsic value adds to the symbols meaning. Because gold is so soft, it can be re-sized and reshaped. Despite its popularity, yellow gold still has some drawbacks. Because of its malleability, it is easy for the ring to become nicked and scratched and dull as a result. Also, over time some rings lose their shape. Those who plan on keeping their ring on while they perform routine daily tasks like yard work or cleaning may find gold isn't the right material for their ring.

White gold is another choice that has been very popular in the last decade. White gold holds true to some of the tradition without the yellow gold look. White gold is made by combining a yellow gold alloy with iron, zinc, or palladium. White gold rings are then finished with a rhodium plating that gives the ring a whiter look. White gold and yellow gold share many of the sames benefits. Their drawbacks are also the same. White gold can get scratched easily and lose its shape. Wedding rings made of white gold also need to be re-rhodium plated regularly to maintain their look. Most manufacturers recommend every 6 to 18 months. Some couples find the benefits outweigh the maintenance, for others it becomes another item on the "to-do" list.

In recent years titanium has gained a wider audience in wedding ring material. Unlike other alloys, titanium is extremely light. Although it is not a heavy material, it is a very strong material. Unfinished titanium is dark gray in color, but can be altered by different finishes. Titanium can be a great wedding ring material for couples who don't want the hassle of consistent upkeep. There are some misconceptions that titanium rings cannot be cut off in case of accidents. Since it is harder than gold, the cutting process is also more difficult but it can still be done. One drawback that titanium has is that re-sizing it is not possible.

Tungsten carbide is the newest material to market that we will look at. Tungsten carbide is created by combining a bonding agent with tungsten and carbon particles. Once a tungsten ring has been cast it is extremely hard and scratch resistant. Tungsten is actually a lot heavier than gold or silver, but it much more durable also. As wedding bands go, tungsten rings maintain the cleanest finish as scratches to it are not easily visible. Tungsten lacks the malleability of gold and cannot be re-sized. Tungsten rings can also be broken if dropped onto ceramic tile or other accidents.

Choosing a wedding band means making many choices. A couple can choose a traditional material or a new one. The most important thing is that a couple choose something they will be pleased with. There is a much better chance of a couple appreciating their rings if they have taken the time to educate themselves. - 30299
